Happy Adoption Day, 2008

It's been two years since we travelled to Tainan and Lu-Yu became a Martin-Spisak. Tonight we watched a few videos and have been looking through some old photos. It's remarkable how much has happened since then, how incredible it is to see this process of adoption and attachment in hindsight. There's this strange experience with adoption where you feel like you're immediately connected with the adopted child. But it takes a few years to realize that it wasn't so -- that while there may have been a mystical bond between parent and child (or sibling and child), it's time and nurturing that makes it real. Two years ago, seeing Lu-Yu run toward us down the halls of St. Lucy's, I knew that he was my child. But now, as I see him playing with his new dump truck in the new pile of dirt in our backyard, he knows that he's our child. And that makes it real. This is his place. This is his family.
